request an appointmentWhat is family planning?
Family planning includes services that help you plan for the number of children you want to have and the spacing between each child.
The goal of family planning is to prevent unintended pregnancies. The Peninsula Healthcare & Wellness Center team also offers resources to lower your risk for health complications that can negatively impact your ability to have children and your long-term physical and sexual health.
What family planning services are available?
The family planning services at Peninsula Healthcare & Wellness Center are available for men and women and include sexually transmitted disease (STD) screenings, infertility evaluations, and sexual wellness education and counseling.
For women, additional family services are available and include:
- Birth control
- Pregnancy testing
- Pelvic and breast exams
- Cervical cancer screenings (Pap smear)
The team offers a wide range of birth control options to prevent pregnancy. Based on your plans for family and your health history, they can recommend birth control pills, patches, injections, or implants.
They also offer services to place and remove an intrauterine device (IUD), a small T-shaped device that fits inside your uterus and prevents sperm from meeting eggs.
What can I expect during my initial family planning consultation?
At your initial family planning consultation, the Peninsula Healthcare & Wellness Center team spends time understanding your medical history and your current plans for family. They perform a physical exam and a pelvic exam to assess your overall health.
During a pelvic exam, the team checks your inner reproductive organs to identify issues that can affect your fertility. They can also collect a sample of your cervical cells during a Pap smear to check for changes that occur with cervical cancer.
The team examines your breasts for abnormalities that can indicate breast cancer. You may also need STD screenings if you’re having unprotected sex with a new partner or multiple partners. If you have infertility issues, you may need additional diagnostic testing.
You can expect to schedule routine family planning visits to ensure your birth control is working well and that your reproductive system is healthy. The team can meet with you by phone or through the online telemedicine platform. When you’re ready to become pregnant, you can meet with the team to discuss your options for stopping birth control.
